Overuse, such as too many hours hunched over often triggers muscle strains. Even minor things, such as reading in bed or gritting your teeth, can strain neck muscles.
Degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis (the wearing down of joint cartilage) and spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spaces in the spine) can lead to neck pain as you age. Your body then forms bone spurs that affect joint motion and cause pain.
The sudden forced movement of the neck or head and rebound in the opposite direction (whiplash) can cause pain and soreness.
Certain diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, meningitis, or cancer, can cause neck pain.
Poor posture (sitting for long periods of time; poor computer, keyboard, chair positioning), Improper desk ergonomics, being overweight, and weak abdominal muscles can all affect spine posture and contribute to neck pain.
When we see a Therapist we can talk about the mechanism of the injury. If it's a recent injury or a chronic injury, a physical therapist is able to identify possible structures involved in your injury. Majority of conditions can be treated by a therapist which does not involve invasive (surgical) treatment and are cost effective.
